Osogbo seminar and quiz: As Ebunoluwa and Olive branches soar up.
As part of their efforts to encourage the students of primary and secondary schools, the medical students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso co-owned and run by both Oyo and Osun State governments known as LIFE LIGHT REMEDIALS, organised annual seminar and quiz competition for shortlisted primary and secondary schools in Osogbo, capital of Osun State on Saturday 29th of August 2009.
The theme of the seminar is FACING THE CHALLENGE OF DECLINE IN ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. Important personalities were invited to chair the occasion among whom is Mr Abiodun Akintaro, the Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Finance who was the chairman.
The participating schools under the primary school category include: Ebunoluwa Nursery & Primary School, Olive Branches and Goodness & Mercy all in Osogbo while the participating secondary schools were Bisola college of Arts and Science(BICAS), Ebunoluwa International school,Osogbo Grammar School and Roseful International school all in osogbo.
Speaking at the occasion, the guest speaker Mrs Oluyamo M.O lamented the situation of education in Nigeria today and lack-luster attitude of students to learning. She noted that education is to produce good citizens because it is the engine that propels a nation. She however bemoaned the unresolved rift between Academic Staff of University,(ASUU), and the federal government. She suggested that education should be well funded by the government through the provisions of facilities and improvement in the supervision of schools through government's educational programs such as Universal Basic Education,(UBE) etc.
Presenting her own speech Dr. Mrs Ojemakinde, a renowned lecturer, encourage the teachers to be deligent and hardworking as they are the people who make a nation. She said, it takes a lot of skills, dedication and commitment to be a teacher. '' I encourage you teachers to be hardworking. Even if government does not appreciate your service, God will reward you abundantly''
The chairman of the occasion Mr. Abiodun Akintaro who was accompanied by his wife delivered the address that specified the roles expected of the parents, teachers and students. He urged the students and pupils to be curious to learning as education is the best lagacy which requires a lot of challenges quoting that '' a person who has not made any mistake is someone who has never tried to do anything tangible"
During the quiz competition for primary school category, Olive Branches came first while Ebunoluwa International School came first under the secondary school category.
Speaking with Naija Advertiser reporter shortly after the program Mr M.O Olatunji, the vice principal of Bisola College of Arts and Science lauded the program organised by Life Light Remedials. He said this should be emulated by other tertiary institutions across the nation.
Mr kunle who cordinated the quiz competition corner who is also one of the organising students said the major aim of organising the program is to promote educational development from the grassroot and encourage the student towards education. All the participating schools went home with gifts and prizes.
